Now through the end of March is the best time to buy fruiting, flowering, or shade trees and shrubs in bare root. What does purchasing bare root look like? In our south field, near the 1888 Meadow Schoolhouse, we have row after row of ornamental trees and shrubs, as well as fruiting trees and shrubs lined out and healed into the sawdust beds. After some research on which varieties you are hoping to bring into your garden, simply pull the bare root tree or shrub from its place, place it in a plastic garbage bag (8 cents, or bring your own) and bring them to the Garden Store where we will gladly check you out.
The key to planting bare root trees while they are dormant is keeping the graft union above the soil. This means your hole should be twice as wide as the root system, but only as deep as the graft union. Adding mulch around the trunk, like a mote, but not hugging the trunk, helps retain moisture as we head into the warmer months. Once, planted, thoroughly water your tree or shrub and then let Mother Nature do the rest through April and May. Come summer, daily watering is essential to ensure a healthy start and negate the stresses of hot summer days.
Bare root is an excellent deal because you are purchasing 1-3-year-old trees (some of which are over 10 ft tall!) without the soil or pot, which adds labor cost. Planting during the dormant season is ideal because it causes less stress on the plants. Check out our list here Fruit Tree List 2023, and explore the many great varieties you can add to your garden this winter.
Our tips for successful bare-root planting
- **Timing is Key:** Plant during the dormant season, usually late fall to early spring, when the tree is not actively growing.
- **Prepare the Soil:** Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil. Break up any compacted soil and add organic matter if needed.
- **Dig a Proper Hole:** Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the roots without bending or crowding. The depth should be sufficient for the roots to spread comfortably.
- **Soak the Roots:** Before planting, soak the bare roots in water for a few hours to rehydrate them.
- **Positioning:** Place the tree in the center of the hole with the roots spread out. Position it at the same depth it was grown in the nursery.
- **Backfill Carefully:** Fill the hole with soil, packing it gently to eliminate air pockets. Water as you fill to help settle the soil.
- **Mulch:** Apply a layer of mulch around the tree to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
- **Watering:** Provide ample water after planting and regularly thereafter. Deep watering is essential for establishing a strong root system.
- **Stake if Necessary:** If the tree is top-heavy or in a windy location, consider staking it to provide support until the roots are established.
Remember to follow specific guidelines for the tree species you’re planting, as different trees may have unique requirements.
